Reflecting Tips started as a temporary installation in 1999 at Connemara Conservancy located in Dallas, Texas. It was expanded in 2001 and exhibited at DiverseWorks Art Space and Buffalo Bayou Park in Houston, Texas. That same year, the Yahoo! Corporation purchased it for their permanent collection and it is now on view at their corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, California.
Reflecting Tips is made of 22 units of high-intensity reflective sheeting, powder-coated steel and epoxy, spanning across 10,000 square feet. This is a low-tech piece that has high-tech surprises. Consisting of over 6,000 individual pieces grouped into 22 separate units, the sculpture uses man-made objects of simple, thin, white powder-coated steel wires with small, medium, and large-sized high-intensity reflective sheeting that is attached onto steel plates welded to the tops of the wires. This reflective sheeting casts light back to the viewer at an 800 candle-power intensity; the wires sparkle during the day with the colors of the rainbow and light up as cars pass by at night, depending on where the light is coming from and where the viewer is positioned. Meant to contribute and add to the natural beauty of the landscaped grasses, Reflecting Tips is not the "usual" public art piece. Instead of a very formal, unaccessible, larger-than-life sculpture, this piece is down-to-earth, of nature but not from nature, very modest and yet whimsical.
